Black Widow Week 3: My Spider Mite Battle & 48-Hour Organic IPM Regime

Week 3 of veg was cruising along on my Black Widow run… until I grabbed the phone scope and spotted every grower’s nightmare — spider mites. 🕷️ Here’s exactly how I caught them early and the 48-hour organic IPM plan I used to hit back hard: no harsh chemicals, all wrapped up before the flip to flower.

🕷️ The Discovery

Tiny yellow-white speckles across the leaves and the faintest webbing under the canopy — textbook early spider-mite damage. Under the scope there was zero doubt. The silver lining? I caught them in veg, which gives me room to fight back properly before flower.

⏱️ The 48-Hour Battle Plan

Step 1 — Defoliate & bag (Day 1). I stripped the heavily-affected lower leaves, bagged them immediately and walked them straight out of the room. Never let infested leaves brush another plant — you’re carrying eggs.

Step 2 — 24-hour healing window (Day 2). After heavy defoliation I give the plant a full day to seal those wounds before spraying anything oily. Hitting fresh cuts with oil or pyrethrin is asking for rot and burn.

Step 3 — Lights-off knockdown (Day 2, evening). At lights-off I coat the undersides of every leaf with a heavy contact spray. Lights-off is non-negotiable — oils plus light equals scorched leaves.

⭐ The Two Golden Rules

1. Break the hatch cycle. Contact sprays kill live mites but not their eggs. Eggs hatch every 3–5 days, so I re-spray on day 4 to catch the new wave — skip this and they bounce right back.

2. Beat the flowering deadline. You must win this before flipping to 12/12. Once buds form you can’t be spraying oils and pyrethrins — it wrecks the taste, smell and safety of your smoke. Veg is your window. Use it.
